The right gym clothes can make the difference between sticking with an exercise program or being one and done. Once you've finally decided to start working out and have found the program for you, your clothing can either help you get into the fitness mindset or, in some cases, completely hinder your efforts and leave you unmotivated.
There are three things to keep in mind when choosing gym clothes: fit, comfort and function:
- Fit: Gym clothes need to fit well and not be too loose or sloppy. Not only will you look better in gym clothes that fit well - a great motivator to work out - but your workout will be safer. Loose gym clothing can get caught in machines and cause injury.
- Comfort: Gym clothing that is too tight or that rubs against your skin limits your freedom of movement. It's also a fact that if you don't feel comfortable, you won't want to wear it.
- Function: A bathing suit won't work in a yoga studio. Running shorts might not be best for a spinning class. Gym clothes serve a function and it's important to buy the ones that perform properly.
At the top of the list of gym clothing are your undergarments. For guys, this means wearing a jockstrap under your gym clothes. Not only will it protect your goodies, but the people who see you walking around will appreciate it. For ladies, it means wearing a sports bra. Again, a good sports bra will keep the girls where they belong and prevent them from bouncing around. You'll be more comfortable - so will everyone else in the gym.
When it comes to pants or shorts, it's your choice. Wear what you like, but make sure they are not super loose and baggy. You don't need your gym clothes getting caught in the machines. Choose a breathable synthetic fabric that will wick away the sweat.
T-shirts are acceptable gym clothes. So are tank tops, especially if you're lifting weights. A tank top lets you see the muscles you are working, which can be a super motivator. Again, try gym clothing made of breathable synthetics. Some people like mesh fabrics for t-shirts and tanks.
Buy a good shoe, especially if you are walking or running. Spend the extra money for a quality running shoe or cross trainer The fit and comfort will be well worth the price.
